2025 Opening Day
Opening Day 2025
Thank you to everyone who came out to Opening Day on March 1st and to those who participated in our Home Run Derby fundraiser. We raised $4,000! These funds will go towards improving the OBA experience overall, from purchasing new equipment to upgrading the fields, while also keeping registration costs down.
And now to announce our Home Run Derby winners! Individual winners in each division receive a pair of Bruce Bolt batting gloves. Those winners are:
Pinto: Grayson Tomlins with $325!
Mustang: Landon Orvis hitting 8 home runs and raising $870!
Bronco: Andrew Losee with $200 raised!
Pony: Will Yancey with $100 raised!
The highest fundraising teams in each division win an ice cream party at Loards in Orinda for their entire team. Winning teams are:
Pinto: A tie between the Mean Green Baseball Machines and the Banana Slugs with $430 each
Mustang: 10U Bandits with $1,420 raised
Bronco: 11U Bandits with $150
Pony: 13U Bandits with $100
The 10U Bandits team, having raised the most funds for OBA overall, also gets to join the Oakland Ballers out on the field during the national anthem at a home game this summer!
A time honored tradition at Opening Day is the recognition of past and present players through our awards and scholarships. This year’s recipients included:
Robert F. Hegarty Hall of Fame Award: Joel Kelly
The Robert F. Hegarty Hall of Fame is formed in recognition of a community volunteer who has provided tireless and valued service to OBA over many years. Through the course of their tenure with OBA, these pioneering OBA board members or long-time volunteers went above and beyond to make OBA and our community a far better place.
2023 Manager of the Year Award: Tim Losee
Being a manager of a team requires several things: patience and willingness to teach; time; productive energy and enthusiasm for the game; and setting a positive example in hopes of being a role model.
Curtis Bottomley Awards
The Curtis Bottomley Award is named after a former OBA player who tragically passed away long before his time. This player demonstrated outstanding effort and set the example for his teammates with not necessarily the caliber of his/her play but with their attitude, sportsmanship and appreciation of all that the game of baseball stands for. We recognized the following players in their respective divisions.
Pinto: Benjamin Bassett
Mustang: Dylan Linschied
Bronco: Makenna Morgan
Pony: Parker Bjornson
For the Love of the Game Award: Trey Atkinson
The Will Newton Memorial “For the Love of the Game” Award is named after another OBA player who exemplified a true love of the game and their teammates over their OBA career. That spirit carried Will into his Miramonte baseball career before a car accident suddenly ended his life in 2000. This award goes to a Pony 8th grader for their commitment to OBA, their team, and their coaches.
Dave Nolan Memorial Scholarship: Duncan Oliver
Dave Nolan Memorial Scholarship goes to a current Miramonte High School senior. Nominated by the Miramonte Varsity Head Coach to a player who is a great teammate, active in the MHS and Orinda community, demonstrates sportsmanship and appreciation of all that the game of baseball stands for.
